Our Story

The "Friends of Affordable Housing" initiative has been created to address the challenges long-term New Jersey residents face in securing affordable housing following the COVID-19 pandemic. This situation has contributed to rising gentrification and increased homelessness, as housing prices soar while local incomes stagnate. The influx of out-of-state buyers further complicates this issue.

In light of these challenges, we are launching a housing reform campaign to develop solutions for all community members, including individuals experiencing homelessness, senior citizens, young adults, and first-time homebuyers. Current affordable housing policies primarily focus on rental options, neglecting broad community needs.

A key objective of our campaign is to construct tiny homes for those living in homeless encampments across New Jersey, starting near the Lincoln Tunnel on land owned by Hudson County. There remains over $9 million from the American Rescue Plan that has not yet been allocated for addressing the homelessness crisis.

Each year, we will offer recommendations to improve the delivery of affordable housing in New Jersey.
